Ronald Reagan in Private - A Memoir of my years in the White House

Jim Kuhn, executive assistant of the President
Publisher: Sentinel 2004

As the personal assistant to a U.S. president who is probably the most popular? This book opens our eyes to the logistics involved in a presidential election campaign, as well as the daily life of the White House. Written from the perspective of the Executive Assistant to the President, who has worked in this case, two presidential campaigns of Ronald Reagan as an advance man, isunbelievable, disclosed everything in a "date" or a "look" of the president.

Certainly there are insights personality and behavior of President Reagan and Mrs. Reagan, in his book, and personal anecdotes, but this is not a tell-all "or biography of the man. Jim Kuhn is one die-hard fan of Reagan, "and you will not find a negative word about them in the book. The author spent day and night, or very close to the president for four yearsand is still only praise for his boss.

I found the section on negotiations with Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985 and 1986 are of particular interest from the standpoint of personal assistant. There were a number of details during meetings, contributing significantly to the results appeared. It 'was also enlightening to hear the response of President Reagan, where the talks stopped and the result seemed to escape. If you enjoy reading history or real people and real events, thisis a better "light reading" are.

Private Equity vs. Venture Capital

While both venture capital firms and private equity cash in exchange for equity positions in companies, is the highest award of when the investment is made. With the exception of turnaround investments, private equity firms tend to more established companies with a history of successful investment, and, preferably, the cash flow of reliable tent, to invest venture capital firms, with previous stage show a company's market presence less.

The distinctionbetween the terms used in venture capital and private equity above applies to the language spoken in the United States. That is, the United States, use the two terms, as if they were investing significantly different types of companies in various stages of growth. In Europe, however, the conditions of risk capital and private equity are somewhat interchangeable, is that British English term Venture Capital is used to describe a specific subset of the PE market, used. Therefore,Europe, when someone speaks of private equity may in fact be what someone would be in the United States applies a venture capital company to call.

Another point of potential semantic confusion is that private equity is also a term commonly used for people who invest real estate operating room. While the use of the term has in real estate, the same underlying financial importance, the global private equity real estate in general the full rangecompanies than those normally directly to businesses. There are some exceptions, as some investment firms to invest in businesses and homes, but tend to be much in the minority.

While chatting debate, Should we also note that companies direct investment in companies, often with different names, all of equal importance, including: PE firms, financial sponsors, investment firm, investment firm or buyoutCompany. Similarly, investment banks, often with a Leveraged Finance Group, which is often the same as the Financial Sponsors Group, which are often structured part of the Capital Markets Group. These can be a bit 'confusing, until someone says exactly who are different ways to say the same thing.

In GRACE & POWER: THE PRIVATE WORLD OF THE KENNEDY WHITE HOUSE, New York Times bestselling author Sally Bedell Smith takes us inside the Kennedy White House with unparalleled access and insight. Having interviewed scores of Kennedy intimates, including many who have never spoken before, and drawing on letters and personal papers made available for the first time, Smith paints a richly detailed picture of the personal relationships behind the high purpose and poiltical drama of the twentieth century's most storied presidency.
At the dawn of the 1960s, a forty-three-year-old president and his thirty-one-year-old first lady – the youngest couple ever to occupy the White House – captivated the world with their easy elegance and their cool conviction that anything was possible. Jack and Jackie Kennedy gathered around them an intensely loyal and brillant coterie of intellectuals, journalists, diplomats, international jet-setters and artists. Perhaps as never before, Washington was sharply divided between the “ins” and the “outs.”
In his public life, JFK created a New Frontier, stared down the Soviets, and devoted himself to his wife and children. As first lady, Jackie mesmerized foreign leaders and the American people with her style and sophistication, creating a White House renowned for its beauty and culture. Smith brilliantly recreates the glamorous pageant of the Kennedy years, as well as the daily texture of the Kennedys’ marriage, friendships, political associations, and, in Jack’s case, multiple love affairs.
Smith’s striking revelations include new information about what drew Jack to his numerous mistresses – and what effects the relationships ultimately had on the women; about the rivalries and resentments among Kennedy’s advisers; and about the poignant days before and after Kennedy’s assassination.
Smith has fashioned a vivid and nuanced portrait not only of two extraordinary individuals but of a new age that sprang to life around them. Shimmering with intelligence and detail, GRACE AND POWER is history at its finest.

I enjoyed this book very much. I try to spread out my reading to keep a wide variety following. This book was just what I was looking for. I liked the balance, the development of the characters and the over all pictures created. I share my reviews with two book clubs, one in New York and the other here in Aspen. I love to share reviews of book as it is so positive and I get great tips. This book will be an added showcase. I try my best to give either a positive review or nothing at all, negative review are worthless to me and those in our book clubs, we look for the positive. This book was just what I was looking for, not too much of anything, fun where it should have been and no so where it needed to be serious. Great job.
