Classic mystery writer, Ross Macdonald, author of biographies

Ross Macdonald is the pseudonym of Kenneth Millar. It was December 13, 1915 Born in Los Gatos, California. His father, John Macdonald Millar, sometimes it was a newspaper editor, poet and athlete, and his mother Anne (Moyer) Millar, was a nurse. Some time later the family moved to Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, as Ross was about four years, his father left the family.

Growing up, she lived with Ross and his mother and various relatives. Ross, thoughacademically inclined had a troubled youth. He drank and smoked too much, fought with his companions, was a petty thief and enjoyed the pool and gambling.

Ross's father was an insurance policy, enough to see the state for four years at the University of Western Ontario, where he received a teaching certificate. He also attended the University of Toronto for a year. He was an assistant professor at the University of Michigan, where he finished his studies. Hegraduated Phi Beta Kappa, with a doctorate in literature.

Ross Macdonald met Margaret Sturm, another aspiring writer, while in high school. Reconnected and married in 1938. Their only daughter, Linda died, 1970.

Ross is the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific off the coast of Southern California. When Margaret came to visit him, she fell in love with the area and made the beautiful coastal city of Santa Barbara home.

Ross Macdonald puts hisThe protagonist, detective Lew Archer philosophical rough edges, Santa Barbara, but changed the name of Santa Teresa. Many years later, another mystery writer Sue Grafton, did the same with his character, female detective Kinsey Millhone. Sue Grafton has written the introduction for the book, "Ross Macdonald, a biography," by Tom Nolan.

Ross began his writing career under his real name. His wife was to be prominent as a writer under the name Margaret voltageMillar, so he started to write under the name John Ross Macdonald. He later shortened to Ross because of possible confusion with another author, John D. MacDonald Macdonald.

Although Ross earned rave reviews during his career as a writer, it was not until the publication of "The Goodbye Look" in 1969, became a successful author in the United States and Europe. In 1973, the Mystery Writers of America named him Grand Master.

In 1981, Ross Macdonald was diagnosedAlzheimer's disease. It 'died in Santa Barbara at July 11, 1983.

There are many good reasons to read the biographies: for more people to read their roots suspended in the secret of their success and to seek inspiration from their bad behavior in These are all good reasons, but usually read biographies of laziness and gossip.

The greatest biography in English is probably still "Boswell's Life of Johnson." It 'a very famous and very dense book, but it's also very funny.

Excellent Book! - Will Ramirez - Los Angeles, CA
I did not expect to enjoy this book so much. It is truly a great and inspiring story. Of course it's a bit depressing at times based on the events but overall it's a great story of survival. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in survival stories and overcoming odds. In fact, after reading this book I was inspired to read "Alive," and although I found it to be very good, this book was more readable and interesting.

Peter Peterson - Truly living the American dream

George Petropoulos Vahl came from Greece, did so many immigrants to America for a better life for himself and his family. An excellent piece - Nicolaos Chrysanthou - Greece
I would strongly recommend this book. Even though it gets a bit heavy at the beginning, nevertheless it does a bit of justice to an important figure of 20th century physics. It shows how hard one may fall the higher up the ladder one climbs, doing little justice to his intellect, stature and charisma.

I would of course, have preferred to read more on his life at Los Alamos coupled with the physics but perhaps this was not the intention of the authors in the first place. Nevertheless an inspiring effort, no less commendable.

The Hobo Philosopher - Richard E. Noble - Florida Panhandle
My dad was a Merchant Marine during World War II and again after the war in the late 40s and through the 50s. He told many stories about his adventures and his life aboard ship. He dreaded going to sea. He craved a land job. I wanted to find out more about my father's dread of life on the sea. This book provided that incite. The stories about life on board ship and off conformed with my dad's renditions. Mr. Rawlins' narrations were more detailed and more elaborate but the similarities were obvious.
This book was just what I was looking for. I was surprised to find that a seafarer's union still existed and that it was international. I intend to do more reading on this subject. I found this book useful, informative and a good picture of what my dad was dealing with.
The book is straight forward and professionally written. I would say that Mr. Rawlins did a good job of painting a picture of the modern day Merchant Marines.

They say the work of Margaret: "Her novels for their psychological penetration of hearts and minds of the killers are required. Margaret has also written a non fiction book Birds and animals have been observed. Together with her husband, she founded a chapter of the Audubon Society.

Margaret was the prestigious Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of establishedIn1955 America for best novel, after "a beast in sight." In 1965 she became the campaign called "Los Angeles Times. It was also the Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America in 1982, the award and the Derrick Murdoch Award in 1986.

Margaret died of a heart attack March 26, 1994, at his home in Santa Barbara. One of his favorite quotes was: "Life is something that happens while you're making other plans." Unfortunately, few of his books are still in print.

The book is written in context of some of our shallowest values in American culture regarding how women appear and not nearly enough about how they influence the development of the national concscience. Mrs. Adams was more admirable, whereas Mrs. Washington was just the first. She cared for her husband well but seemed not to share much of the sensibilities of the issues of the time. Her resistence to his desire to free the slaves after his death, as he had grown to believe was appropriate, was a case in point of the smallness of her viewpoint. The fact that she felt her life threathen after his death was the impetus for changing her mind, which brings into question how she had related to them(the slaves) over the years. She was the first woman of stature in the country to demonstrate how other women of different races were exploited and oppressed to preserve her way of life.

I prefer homages to Eleanor Rosevelt as examples to teach young girls values of consequence. I am surprised that we would want to elevate one more "southern belle" who just wanted to dressup and look pretty while the servants were living in hell. We already have Scarlet O'hara.

The author's recreation of her youthful image feels so anti-feminist since it seems to attach too much value to how she looked rather than how she acted. Such superficiality.

Alexander McCall Smith - American Author

Alexander McCall Smith (nickname: Sandy) was August 24, 1948 in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia. At that time there was a British colony, now called Zimbabwe.
