Leadership and adversity - The design of the prominent leaders - leadership and how they identified

What is the best definition of leadership? I grew up in the 1950's and 1060's "baby boomers". When I was little, my idea or definition of what is leadership trainers consisted of a combination of roller sports models derived from dozens of biographies, including political and military leaders, captains of industry robber barons, e.

I read with great interest the biographies and autobiographies of the "titans of industry," with its incredible"Rags to riches" barons of the 19th and early 20th centuries, like Carnegie, DuPont, Edison, Ford, Goodyear, Huntington, Morgan, Stanford, Vanderbilt, as well as those of the magnates of the mid-20th century, as Watson (IBM) and Sloan (General Motors).

I avidly read political biographies of Winston Churchill, Jefferson Davis, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Truman, George Washington and Woodrow Wilson. I devoured biographies of well-While the general military-to-life in the United States George Patton and Douglas MacArthur.

I, as an Eagle Scout, was mainly with the biography of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the British general who distinguished himself in South Africa Boer Wars, this man has the honor of the commandant of the British military to be, to take build the world Boy Scout movement.

I studied the current leaders in magazines, books, and lived asnew generation of business leaders were on television, including the Bass brothers, Henry Ford II, Howard Hughes, Lee Iacocca, J. Willard Marriott, H. Ross Perot and Sam Walton.

I enjoyed watching the great actors like Charlton Heston, Gregory Peck, George C. Scott, Jimmy Stewart, who brought to life the characters of Moses, Michelangelo, Douglas MacArthur, George Patton and fictional characters like "Mr. Smith" or "George Bailey." I watched and admired the success of coaches like JohnWooden and Vince Lombardi. They have trained well, build successful teams, but a true leader and builder of the young, because they have encouraged their players to become a whole person upright and true team effort, not just some outstanding basketball or football player.

All the biographies, magazine articles, presentations, film and television coverage of state and government have contributed to my leadership and my definition of exactly what mental model. Success storiesThe leader who has overcome adversity me an idea as simple as these leaders with the setbacks, the trauma of life, then success in spite of adversity overcome, obstacles and challenges.

s President John F. Kennedy 's life and his famous book (1956) provided profiles courageous leader. This book is the biographies of others gave me a real vision for the courage to succeed, no matter what the need and a strong leader. These stories may have subconsciously influencedmy interest in Horatio Alger-type stories.

Biographies, personal experience of over 30 years of management experience, and my doctoral studies in management have led, I believe that my choice misadventure argument focuses on leadership e. My reading of studies have provided insights into a process of refining my definition of leadership, as well as the lives of leaders, challenges overcome or dealt with adversity. These early influences formed the basis for my admiration for thisThe leaders who had managed to overcome the tragedy, despite adversity, or hardship.

Leadership is more than one word, is the act of driving. True enlightened "Leadership is leadership, showing the right example, the deep and genuine concern for those who lead, team building, and will have a clear idea of the task ahead.

In order to know my definition of leadership and impact to overcome adversity, I would like to add my personal opiniondetailed definition with a brief review of the literature on leadership and the classical definitions.

I will overcome in the literature also need to support and basis for examining the possible link between the emergency and overcome the obstacles overcome in the design and development of prominent personalities.

Leadership and as identified by scientists and the world

There is no precise definition of fact and final leadership.Rost (1991) presented the idea of "leadership to define," also stressed that there is still no real agreement on what leadership is (p. 6).

The "word for lead, as a verb, comes from the Old English word or leden loedan. Some have attributed different meanings of" lead "word" to go "," open the road "or" cause. "

The university's well known and respected scholars, scientists and phenomenologist van Manen (1991) provide a more practical definition is that"Driving is to go first, and going before you can trust me because I tested the ice" (p. 38). Cronin (1980) offered a simple and clear definition of when he said that the leadership skills to pass, things that are not otherwise have happened, "as (p. 372) can be defined.

Leadership means that some cables, ducts, directs, or someone else order something else. Leadership has many kinds: Situational Leadership, Transformational Leadership,Servant Leadership, Principal Centered Leadership, Management Command, Control, and many other species. Each type has a distinct and different definition, a definition of leadership does not fit all kinds.

Book Review - Theodore Roosevelt on Leadership

No president removes a larger part of the federal government, as Theodore Roosevelt. After being in a number of public offices, including New York Governor and Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt in the public service upon arrival at the White House in 1901 after experiencing the death of President McKinley.

Strock examines Roosevelt's unique approach to managing his life and especially as president. Identified a dozen areas in which primary Rooseveltdemonstrated exceptional leadership skills.

TR, as he was affectionately known, has taken the leadership role, wherever he went. He knew no fear and face every challenge with strength and courage. Roosevelt was a law student all my life all the time. In fact, Roosevelt read a book or two on average per day! He argued that the pace, while the President. He was able to speak due to a problem with people of all types of skills.

It was a team builder. He knewas customer loyalty and maintain. He always had the best on his team. He also knew how to ask and to motivate men and be the best in them. In part he does with his own incredible perseverance and achievements. He set the standard and example for all those who have worked for or with him.

It was a great orator and writer. Long before President Reagan was elected TR was a great communicator.

He was a staunch supporter of personal responsibility and integrity andnever wavered from his loyalty to country and family.

In this book, Strock does a good job of studying the man and the example shows how all these can be burned and effective leadership to achieve more than most presidents before or since.

At the end of each chapter summarizes the principles of leadership head Strock is discussed. His conclusions are often direct quotes or paraphrases from TR. For example, after the first chapter, he lists sevenimportant characteristics of a leader, including a focus on energy looking for information on their conditions and avoid the debt to others, the love of their people to be engaged in the service, to build a service culture of life, that his duty and try to earn success rather than trying to succeed.

This book is a goldmine of the best traits of leadership and philosophy of Roosevelt. In 238 pages is a good book.

Leadership the Eleanor Roosevelt Way - Timeless Strategies from the First Lady of Courage

Over a year ago when I was visiting my favorite library (the Upstart Crow, San Diego Seaport Village), I saw a book called the Eleanor Roosevelt Way Leadership. Because I'm a fan of Mrs. Roosevelt, I knew I had to pack, but then something happened and distracted me, and I left the library without a book in hand. One thing led to another and I never got to order it. So I was really happy when I visited again last month and the book washere!

Part biography, part leadership statement in the context of business, leadership Eleanor Roosevelt as an easy read and interesting. The author offers a chronological overview of the life of Mrs. Roosevelt and the lessons learned in each phase, which makes for a reasonably effective presentation.

My only quibble with this approach is that Gerber moves from time to time by the historical narrative to present an example of a business without much notice and called for closerPlease note that the book otherwise requested.

The focus of the book, not surprisingly, women in leadership positions, although many of the lessons transcend gender. The opening explains that the guide is particularly important for the gender differences that continue to win, with examples of business and politics. Similar disparities in the law and report to the National Association of Women Lawyers' Annual Report of the Third National Survey on the Conservation and Promotion of the specifiedWomen in law firms, which means it is among the top 200 law firms and women include:

* Less than 16% of shareholders equity;
* 15% of medium-high society of the Committee (and an additional 15% of companies have no women on committees) and
* 6% of the firm's managing partner.

In addition, the study found that male equity partners earn women outside an average of $ 87,000. While these statistics are of limited scope, they show that, at least in the companies studied, significantInequality remains. As Gerber wrote,

Although these problems are a bit 'different in nature or extent of the problems of the day of Eleanor, the solutions are on the same basis of: leadership. Why? Leadership is about change. It means consciously make a useful, ethical, and this lead to a process of mutual support and motivation of leaders and those who wait.

Gerber draws lessons of leadership among the various stages of the life of Mrs. Roosevelt. Wider rangeand in depth, the lessons are still instructive, and probably for the reader "to provoke reflection. For example, the following lessons (learned" the hard way ") derive from painful period in which Mrs. Roosevelt found FDR's affair with Lucy Mercer

1. Comment. Every leader experiences difficult circumstances, they can not control. The solution is to learn to say to the leaders to control their reaction. Self-control is a central leadership, because as Mrs. Roosevelt wrote, "theThey exert influence through his life and what it yourself. "Leaders must sample and reactive tendencies instead of reacting to problems.

2. Reflect. At a stroke, suffering, a leader must reflect on the situation and his response. A leader must understand thoroughly, including that of a crisis means to his self-esteem and sources of energy, it can draw on it.

3. Courage to change. When a crisis occurs, the fear is a natural reaction. Mrs. RooseveltThe answer is revealing: "Courage is more exhilarating than fear, and in the long term, it is easier not to become heroes to see the night, but one step at a time, everything that the meeting opens, which is not .. so bad as it looked to be discovered, we have the strength to look down. "

4. Accept the changes and actions taken. After some thought and have the courage to act must be a leader. Mrs. Roosevelt wrote: "People can overcome what appears to be total defeat, difficultytoo large to be worn, but requires the ability to re-adjust to continuously changing conditions of life. "Managers must learn to take measures in question and forward, which occur despite the setbacks on the road.

What are the benefits for lawyers? As shown in the example above, the lessons of leadership Gerber has often drawn from writings and speeches of Mrs. Roosevelt. Leadership the Eleanor Roosevelt Way offers many driving lessons, usually on a rather superficial level,is a general principle without compiling content in depth. Consequently, those who seek thorough discussion on the practical application of leadership or to be disappointed. If you like the story of Roosevelt, however, not a good spirit, but the discussion of the lessons of their current leadership, is likely to benefit from reading Eleanor Roosevelt Way of Leadership.
