Maya Angelou Author Biographies

Dr. Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson April 24, 1928 St. Louis, Missouri. His parents divorced when he was three years. They, along with her brother Bailey, went to live with her grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas.

While visiting his mother in Chicago, Illinois, at age seven, was molested by her mother's boyfriend sexually Maya. He confided to his brother, who tells the family. Consequently, the man was murdered. Maya felt so guilty that he spent five yearsmute.

Maya Angelou has won a scholarship for dance and theater in San Francisco to study the school laboratory. Her to 14 years for the fist African American to become a cable car conductor. Even if you subsequently end at school, she was in her final year pregnant and gave birth to her son, Guy, a few weeks after graduation.

She met and married the South African civil rights activist, points Vusumzi in 1960. He moved to Cairo, Egypt where he was director of the English weekly newspaper.

Maya and her son moved to Ghana, where he served as director and assistant professor at the University of Ghana Music and Theatre. She was also editor andAfrican Review and wrote for various publications.

Maya returned to the USA in 1964. He accepted the invitation of Dr. Martin Luther King invited to serve as coordinator for North Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Martin Luther King was assassinated for his birthday in 1968.

Maya's first book, "I know why the Caged Bird Sings" is the first of five autobiographical volumes, and told of their concerns and needs as a young girl. She continues to writeand acting for television and cinema, and in 1996 the film "Down in the Delta."

He was a Pulitzer Prize in 1972 for his screenplay, Georgia, called Georgia. He won the Presidential Medal of Arts in 2000 and the Lincoln Medal in 2008. He also won three Grammy awards.
In 1993, President Clinton has asked Dr. Maya Angelou to write and recite a poem to him, at his inauguration. was his beautiful poem, "the pulse of morning" transmissionworldwide.
